Is Democracy in a Death Spiral?
Friday - April 21, 2017 at 12:08 am

By Patrick J. Buchanan

“You all start with the premise that democracy is some good. I don’t think it’s worth a damn. Churchill is right. The only thing to be said for democracy is that there is nothing else that’s any better. …

“People say, ‘If the Congress were more representative of the people it would be better.’ I say Congress is too damn representative. It’s just as stupid as the people are, just as uneducated, just as dumb, just as selfish.”

I remember 15 years ago if you said something positive about one of Pat's column on FR you were a luddite, was scorned and nearly run out on a rail(zotted)

Funny just about everything he has predicted about the Death of the West has come true.

In 2000 there were plenty of Buchanan supporters at FR.

Good thing we aren't a democracy

Unfortunately, since the ratification of 17th Amendment and the ruling in Reynolds v. Sims, we're a democracy.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Democracy is death when voters are allowed to vote to take wealth/labor/property from other people. What otherwise would be called theft is given legitimacy because the mob has the most votes and that somehow overrides all other concerns. We are past that point now. Critical mass so to speak.

Short term free stuff overrides long term destitution.

I fear that the number of people in this country that want something for nothing  will out number the worker bees. I look around and see that is happening.

We might be in a down spiral.

Might be?

The entire West is approaching the precipice.
And the speed of that approach is increasing, not decreasing.

Western "democracies" worked when the nations in which that method of government was employed were ethnically, culturally, religiously homogeneous.

Destroy such characteristics with "diversity", and the foundations upon which such nations are built develop cracks and then begin to crumble.

I've posted this before, but will say it again:
The collapse of The West may come as unexpectedly and quickly as did the collapse of the first tower of the World Trade Center in 2001.
One moment it was there, and the next moment... ?
Before that moment came, who was expecting such a catastrophe to actually happen?

By the way, I've been an admirer of Mr. Buchanan for a long time.
He is, and will remain, the only candidate to whom I ever donated money...

To my way of thinking it is our Republican form of representative government that is in death spiral. "Democracy" e.g majority rule is on the upswing...

I believe that to be true, as well.

Good thing we aren't a democracy

We are not supposed to be a democracy but the fact of reality is that we have devolved into a post-constitutional Socialist Democracy at best.  A behemoth oligarchy on the verge of both caste and monarchy rules the country and the people clamor for government to be their god, their equalizer, their punisher and their provider.

We have not been a Representative Republic for some time, and the majority of the population has no want or use for one.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

Democracy IS a death-spiral. That's why we had a Republic, and why we need to get back to it.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
