Justice Dept. Warns Nine Sanctuary Jurisdictions

Fri, Apr 21st 2017 @ 1:40 pm EDT

The Department of Justice warned nine jurisdictions that they could lose federal grant funds unless they demonstrate compliance with federal anti-sanctuary law. The jurisdictions are Chicago, Cook County Ill. (encompasses Chicago), New Orleans, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Miami, Milwaukee, New York City and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

In a letter to the nine, the Department said the Office of Justice Programs Byrne JAG grant is subject to compliance with 8 USC ยง 1373, which prohibits restrictions on communications and information sharing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It said the Department "expects each of these jurisdictions to comply with this grant condition and to submit all documentation to the Office of Justice Programs by June 30, 2017, the deadline imposed by the grant agreement."

Sounds unusual to have the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on the list.

Wonder why they do not comply?  Perhaps when they incarcerate someone they find out is illegal, they spring him lose rather than inform ICE?

If so, that is very dangerous, especially to CA communities who depend upon criminals to stay behind bars.

It's California. Almost NO ONE in any position of power there is going to "comply" with the Trump administration (aside: very few California "Republicans" are in a position to control anything there).

Yes, of course.
You mean... you don't understand that?
Again, it's California. See above.

And of course, this needs to change.
The conventional wisdom to this point has been "cut off their funding".
But that's not going to be enough to force compliance.
People are going to have to be arrested, perhaps at gunpoint with a show of federal troops, to bring about that compliance.
Think "Little Rock Central High School, September 1957..."
