What Russia's Military Looks Like Compared to the U.S.
By Tom O'Connor On 4/7/17 at 2:03 PM

Russia has joined its Syrian and Iranian allies in criticizing the U.S. over President Donald Trump's decision to launch a barrage of missiles on a Syrian air force base Friday after Western nations accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of conducting a chemical weapons attack on civilians.

Russia, which has argued that the chemical incident was the result of a Syrian airstrike on a rebel chemical munitions facility, has expressed outrage over Trump's military response. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the U.S. attack "a significant blow to Russian-American relations," according to his official spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, The Guardian reported. Russian military personnel were reportedly present at the Shayrat air base when the U.S. Navy targeted it with 59 Tomahawk missiles. Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis had said Russia was warned in advance and that risks to troops were minimized, but Moscow has already scrapped an air defense deal—an action which could significantly increase the possibility of an incident occurring between the U.S. and Russian militaries in Syria.

That was a singularly uninformative article, and unfortunately, very typical of Newsweek for the last 20 years.

I'll summarize.

Around 1980 I remember reading  Navy  Times story about a Soviet Naval frigate passing a US Navy ship and using the signal light sent the question, "how's the worlds second largest navy?"   The US vessel returned the message, "Just fine, how's the second best?"

What has changed since 1980?   Our military has been tested in battle time and time again and is far more lethal..  be it bigger or smaller than Russia.

Dead on. Russia has some serious issues with their population. They are lazy. They still have a Soviet mindset in many areas. Their only real economic driver is oil because they have no one inventing and developing technology. They have a serious alcohol problem. A lot of people spend the day on the edge of or straight up drunk. It's so bad that they have a serious birth rate problem. Putin used to have special get laid holidays to try and get some re population going.

A co-worker who returned from a business trip to Russia said his hotel didn't have towels or toilet paper in the bathrooms.  When needed you had to get them from an lifeless humorless old lady who sat all day at the end of the hall. And each floor had an old lady, doing the same.

When the two Germanies were united, those from the East were found to be severely wanting, in workplaces.

They had no sense of "work ethic," having 2 generations under soviet style communism. But they did have the industrious Westerners to provide role models.

OTOH Russians have had no such role models. Between East Germany and Russia, Russia appears to have gotten the worst results.
