CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Marvel Comics has been getting a lot of heat over the actions of an Indonesian artist who slipped pro-Muslim sentiments into the first issue of "X-Men Gold," a new series.

Indonesian artist Ardian Syaf included the numbers "212" and "51" prominently in the background of a large panel in the issue, a reference to the Dec. 2 protests by Muslim Indonesians against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, the Christian governor of Jakarta. The 51 refers to a verse of the Koran that many believe says Muslims should not be led by Jews or Christians.

In the same panel, Kitty Pryde, the Jewish leader of the X-Men, attempts to appeal to a mob of mutant-hating people to accept them as human beings, if not heroes. Syaf placed Pryde's head so that it obscures part of a jewelry store sign , making the word "Jew" prominent.

In another panel, the Russian X-Man Colossus wears a T-shirt bearing the letters and numbers "QS 5:51," a reference to a verse from the Koran that translates to saying that Muslims should not appoint Christians or Jewish people as their leaders. ...
