RECAP: The Battle of Vimy Ridge, as it happened
« on: April 09, 2017, 05:30:08 pm »
It's one of those Live as it happened historical articles. A really neat thing celebrating a neglected yet very competent military.

One hundred years ago today, on a cold and snowy Easter Monday, the Battle of Vimy Ridge — one of the first battles in the larger, British-led Battle of Arras and a key victory for Canada as a nation — began.

Vimy has been called Canada’s coming-of-age moment, an event in which our soldiers made great sacrifices in the pursuit of hard-fought victory.

“The idea of Vimy has come to signify Canadian martial strength and unity of purpose. The capture of the seemingly impregnable ridge by Canadians from all regions is a built-in unity story.”

We’ll be following the course of events here, highlighting key moments from the preparation to the front lines to the aftermath and legacy.

Let’s begin.
