Illinois State House Rejects Legislation Making Obama’s Birthday a Holiday

Despite being born in Hawaii, former President Barack Obama calls Illinois his home state, where his family still owns a house in Chicago.

Obama’s political career began in the Land of Lincoln, but Illinois just decided against honoring one of their most famous sons.

Democrats have sizable majorities in both houses of the Illinois General Assembly, with a 67-51 advantage in the House and a 37-22 majority in the Senate, but were unable to make Obama’s birthday an official holiday.

Illinois is one of the most liberal states in America, with Obama winning his home state by more than 16% in 2012 and 25% in 2008, but their refusal to give the former president a state holiday is a major embarrassment to his legacy.
