A year ago, a 2-year-old dog with broken legs, ribs and a belly full of carpet was fortunate enough to be saved by an animal shelter and adopted into a loving home.

Now, a year later, the dog’s the one doing the rescuing.

The medium-sized mixed-breed named Peanut suddenly started barking uncontrollably while inside her home in Escanaba, Michigan, Friday morning. The behavior was certainly unusual for the ordinarily shy pup.

She ran up and down the stairs, barking and yelping until her owner finally let her outside. Once the door opened, the dog barreled into an open field behind the house -- her confused owner following close behind.

Eventually, the dog stopped in front of a ditch, and looked back at her owner.

At first, the man pulled on the dog’s collar to turn back, but then he took a closer look and saw a naked little girl curled up into a ball, shivering uncontrollably in the freezing temperatures. Quickly, he hopped into the ditch and wrapped her in his shirt, running back home with Peanut on his heels.

The family called 911 as they covered the girl in blankets to warm her up.

“By the time the ambulance and police arrived, the little girl could only say one thing -- ‘doggie,’” the dog’s owner explained in a letter to the Delta Animal Shelter, where they adopted the dog last April. “Thanks to Peanut, a little girl’s life was saved.”

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Seems to me Peanut saved this little girl from more than just a ditch.

For starters, he saved her life. Uncontrollable shivering is a sign of hypothermia, and she wasn't dressed for the weather.

Next is the question of how she ended up there and why.

The girl Peanut found and another were removed from their nearby home by CPS.

Yep.  That's what I meant.

Some parents aren't parents.  They are just sperm donors and eggs.  Seems every day the local news has a story of child abuse and neglect.  It's heartbreaking.

Hopefully, this little girl and her sibling will find a good, loving home.

Stories like this are a great reminder about man's best friend (on earth).....

First off ... Good Dog!

Now.

How in God's Name did Peanut know she was there?! In a ditch across a field while Peanut was IN the house?

Two things: Smell, and sound. It's how my Lab knows there is a moose in the back yard, when it's out of range of the commotion light and can't be seen from any window.

It's a nice story, although pretty much every sentence is missing, "According to the dog's owner, and only witness, ...".
