House passes NASA authorization bill
« on: March 09, 2017, 01:02:59 am »

WASHINGTON — For the first time in nearly six and a half years, Congress has passed a NASA authorization bill with the approval of such a bill March 7 in the House of Representatives.

The House approved on a voice vote the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017, S.442, after a brief discussion on the House floor where no members spoke against the bill. The same bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent Feb. 17.

The bill authorizes $19.5 billion in spending for NASA in fiscal year 2017. More importantly, it includes a number of policy provisions directing NASA’s activities. They range from development of a detailed plan for NASA’s human exploration programs, with the long-term goal of sending humans to Mars, to giving NASA the ability to establish long-term medical monitoring of former astronauts.

I saw a democrat on twitter giving the standard "Proud to join Ted Cruz in this bipartisan bill to fund NASA" speech.

Hopefully there are a bunch of DIY types that planned for this.

The democrats do. I know Ted Cruz has said that NASA needs to stop looking at cloud tops and concentrate on "Outward".

Homer Hickam has said the NASA needs to listen to the laymen more because trained scientists are too often trained to stay in the box.

Cruz is a scifi nerd from a NASA state. Any combination of he and Rubio in the White house would be good for NASA

I remember NASA under Bill Clinton.. He gutted the program (I think it was gutted to much that caused the Columbia disaster). Newt should have done more when he was Speaker...

Here my Presidential grades on NASA:

Ike N/A it started under him
Kennedy A
Johnson C
Nixon F
Ford Inc
Carter F
Reagan B
Bush I B
Clinton F
Bush II B
Obama D.. Why I gave Obama a D is cause he talked about going to Mars and brought in SpaceX. Gotta give him credit for that.

The advantage of Trump on the NASA issue is that he wants to do spectacular things that he'll be remembered for. It may not be the best reason but I'll take it.

The Mission to Earth has been wildly successful.  Fossil fuel and other mineral exploration, food production, water resources, weather understanding, etc., wouldn't be nearly what they are without the "looking inward" view.  It might not be as "fun" as looking outward, but economically and for our lifestyle, it's been great.
