Beijing worries Washington and Pyongyang are on a collision course, but some U.S. lawmakers have rejected Chinese overtures.

China said on Wednesday that the United States should suspend its THAAD missile defense program with South Korea, in exchange for North Korea halting its nuclear and missile activities.

"Are the two sides really ready for a head-on collision?" said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. "The priority is to flash the red light and apply the brakes."

China, traditionally an ally of North Korea and an opponent of THAAD, seeks a "double suspension," Wang said.

"The two sides are like two accelerating trains coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way," Wang lamented.
