The Royal Navy is so stretched it has been forced to cancel an air show so its helicopters can protect the Fleet from Russian submarines, the Mirror can reveal.

Choppers and crews may also be needed for anti-terror operations and to support the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier when she takes to the sea this summer.

The scale of the challenges facing the Senior service was revealed by a senior Navy commander as he defended axing a popular air show.
