MEXICO CITY — Confrontation with the United States is so central to Mexican history there’s an institution dedicated to the trauma. It’s called the Museum of Interventions.

Remember the Alamo? They do here — as the prelude to a string of defeats, invasions and territorial losses that left Mexico wounded and diminished, its national identity forged by grievance.

The museum is housed in a former convent where Mexican troops were overrun by U.S. soldiers in the 1847 Battle of Churubusco. And for most of the three decades since the museum opened, its faded battle flags seemed like the stuff of buried history, an anachronism in an age of galloping North American Free Trade Agreement integration.

Thats great. Nationalists tend to stay in their own country.

But when they hear Trump boasting he will make Mexico pay for the wall, and the wild cheering in response, they recognize an unmistakable attempt to humiliate them. It is American nationalism at Mexico’s expense, and it stings in a deep, atavistic way, like a childhood bully coming back to beat you up again.

Trump looks a bully with this, and will probably give rise to a Hugo Chavez type in Mexico.

Nobody here will care but that is not someone we want on the border.

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
What a steaming pile of Bolshevik, a level of nationalism not seen in years? Anytime there is a sporting event with Mexico in the U.S. the Mexicans whether they are American citizens or not parade around waving their Mexican flags and chanting their nationalist spew while insulting American Athletes and America, they do the same at any protest anywhere. Mexicans, for the most part until being American citizens for quite a few generations are always Mexico first. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

And after all, America stole a lot of their country, right.............right?

Thousands in Mexico join with the cartels.

You're kidding....right?   You really going to try to blame that, if it happens, on Trump???  When.... Mexico has been importing and catering to Chavez-type commies for decades.... long before Trump made his fortune.  And the current and recent leaders of Mexico are not friends to the USA.  Quite the opposite, in fact.
No quarter given to the enemy within...ever.

Actually the current leader is someone who was cooperating with us on drugs and terrorism.

Trump's a dummy. He could have just left it at the wall, but he had to include making Mexico pay for it. Which just builds useless resentment in Mexico.

I can't think of a Mexican leader that was a friend to the US, ever.

Anti-Americanism has always been popular down there and should be our very last consideration when deciding what to do about the border.

If you spent any time in Mexico, you'd know that it has been an HC style govt there for decades, that the Mexican govt works with both the cartels and the US govt, profiting from both, and that the average Mexican, even those that like Americans, think that we are blithering fools.

To be fair, they arent entirely wrong about that last part as Americans never seem to wise up to the game no matter how blatantly Mexico shoves it in their faces.

Mexico is a little punk country that needs knocked on it's a** a couple of times good and hard. Time to start making them act like adults at the table.

You have no idea what you are talking about as usual. The corrupt dirt bag President of Mexico gives nothing but lip service about helping us on drugs and terrorism. Drugs are still flooding over the border along with cheap labor and criminals. Resentment for Mexico isn't a Trump invention. It has been simmering since Bush pushed his open borders garbage.

I agree completely. But look how many supposedly on the right are spazzing the hell out over the possibility that we might simply follow our own laws and deport illegals. Punk country they may be. But they are dead on that America is largely populated with fools that are easily manipulated and too cowardly to knock them on their ass.
