A majority of Iowans say they think voters should have to present a government-issued identification card before casting a ballot, according to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll.
"If we need something like that to purchase weapons or to drive, then why shouldn’t we have one to vote?" asked Dustin Snow, a 26-year-old Republican and service center manager from Bettendorf.
He's among the 69 percent of Iowans polled by The Des Moines Register who say they support needing an ID to vote, which is included in legislation recently proposed by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate.
That bill, introduced in the Iowa House last week, would make a number of election-related changes that Pate says are needed to ensure the integrity of Iowa's election processes. Among them is requiring every voter to present valid government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or military ID. Registered voters who do not already possess a qualifying identification card would automatically receive a free one in the mail, under the proposal.
