DES MOINES - A group of Republicans in the statehouse want the death penalty in Iowa.

Two bills were introduced in the Senate on Thursday: Senate File 335 and 336. They both deal with introducing the death penalty for crimes like first degree murder, and multiple offenses of kidnapping and sexual abuse against the same minor.

Senators Bertrand, Zaun, Chelgren, Chapman, Behn, Garrett, and Guth are backers of the bills.

Iowa did away with the death penalty in 1965. Life sentences are now carried out for the most serious offenses, including first degree murder, and serious cases of rape and kidnapping...
