Virginia lawmakers move to end sanctuary city policies

Trump vows no funds to areas aiding illegals

By Julia Brouillette — THE WASHINGTON TIMES - - Thursday, February 23, 2017

Virginia lawmakers are moving to ban so-called “sanctuary” cities, as other regional jurisdictions vow to reaffirm their sanctuary status in response to President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

The Republican-controlled General Assembly approved Wednesday a bill that would bar local governments from restricting the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe has promised to veto the legislation.

The Virginia proposal backs the president’s efforts to curb illegal immigration, which include an executive order to withhold federal funds from jurisdictions that inhibit the enforcement of immigration laws. His order has galvanized opposition among some local officials, who say the Trump directive’s language is unclear and its ramifications unknown.

That's making McAuliffe own it. If he vetoes, any person injured or killed, stolen from, sold drugs by, or raped by an illegal immigrant will have the Governor's name all over them. It's his Mike Dukakis/Willie Horton moment. Nice move on the part of the House, there.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

It's about time.

Sure he will. But if any of the legislators who support this legislation have a lick of sense, they'll take that back to their home districts armed with stats proving that McAuliffe is the source of the constituents' woes, and maybe Virginia will have a different Governor next time.

The only reason Terry got elected was because McDonnell got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Cuccinelli was the far better candidate.
