A majority of Canadians generally approve of the Liberal government’s approach to refugees, but Ottawa may be “testing the limits” of how many migrants they are willing to accept, a new poll shows.

While 47 per cent of respondents believe Canada is taking in “about the right number” of refugees, 41 per cent said the number is “already too high,” according to the survey by the non-profit Angus Reid Institute. Eleven per cent said they’d like to see Canada open its doors to even more refugees.

The online survey of 1,508 Canadian adults was conducted Feb. 6 – 9 in the wake of an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump that briefly halted entry of all refugees into the U.S., as well as citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries. The Trump administration is said to be drafting a revised order in the wake of legal challenges to the original one.
