A new Arizona sheriff has dissolved a policy that once helped the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement keep immigrants behind bars but sparked civil rights woes against his predecessor.

Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone said on Friday his agency will no longer allow immigration holds on detainees beyond the maximum 48 hours, reversing a policy created under former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's two-decade reign.

“I have an obligation that this office act constitutionally and within the law,” Penzone said at a press conference.
