ADVISORY – FRIDAY – Department of Environmental Protection to Hold Webinar on 2016 Lawrence County Seismic Events

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a webinar on Friday, February 17, 2017, at 10:00 AM to discuss findings of its review of seismic events that occurred in Lawrence County on April 25, 2016.

A series of low-magnitude earthquakes that began at 4:17 AM in North Beaver, Union, and Mahoning Townships had a marked temporal/spatial relationship to natural gas hydraulic fracturing activities by Hilcorp Energy Company at its North Beaver NC Development well pad, according to an extensive review conducted by DEP and scientific and industry partners.

DEP Acting Secretary Patrick McDonnell; Seth Pelepko, chief of the Division of Well Plugging and Subsurface Activities in the DEP Bureau of Oil and Gas Planning and Program Management; and bureau geologist Harry Wise will discuss the findings and formulation of procedures to reduce seismic risk going forward.

The webinar includes a short Q&A opportunity for accredited media.

It seems that it doesn't take much to create a low-level earthquake.

The release of water over the Oroville dam spillway in California has created multiple magnitude 1.0 earthquakes

Conclusion: The zipper fracturing led to the seismicity.

One key factor is the shallow depth of the basement in the area.  Also, it was right next to a lineament.

Pressure relievers likely to avoid a bigger future earthquake.

Quote
The final magnitude of the earthquakes ranged from 1.8 to 2.3 on the Richter Scale, putting them in the category of microseismic events, which are likely to go unnoticed by humans and only recorded by sensitive seismic monitors.

Oh yes...but it COULD lead to a major seismic event, so fracking should be stopped immediately...except in West Central Texas.  :smokin:
