Can This Presidency Be Saved?
[Ross Douthat]

Ross Douthat FEB. 11, 2017

THE peak of Donald Trump’s presidency, so far and perhaps forever, happened before he became the president. It was the deal he struck with Carrier, the Indiana air-conditioning company, to keep a factory open and jobs in the United States. No moment was so triumphantly Trumpian; nothing has gone as well for him since.

Was the Carrier deal sound economic policy, a sober and restrained use of the presidency’s powers? Not precisely. But it featured Trump following through on his most basic campaign promise: the pledge, delivered in rallies across the country’s stagnant reaches, that he would focus on good-paying jobs for people both parties seemed to have forgotten.

To date every so called deal has been  nothing but smoke and mirrors.  This seems to please those who need to be lied to on a daily basis.
Pity them.

Like the NY Times is worried about "saving" the Trump presidency!   ROFLMAO!!!

Yes, it can be saved. Next question.

It can be saved ... if the Trump team can figure out how to act in a planned and disciplined manner.  Douhat spells out pretty well what they ought to be focusing on.

It remains to be seen if they can tie down the president's tweeting thumbs and stop saying stupid things.

Myst has posted other articles by Ross Douthat. For editorials, the NYT might publish a variety of persons.

A couple of thoughts - One, Trump is an insurgent. Who expected him to transition into the job like an insider? Its been less than a month, and the other party has hardly been cooperative. Give him a little time, for *&^ sake.

Two, much of the turbulence he's experienced so far has been amplified all out of proportion by a MSM that he hates, and that clearly hates him. It doesn't help that a good chunk of the GOP hates him as well.

If he succeeds with his immigration initiatives, follows through with health insurance reforms (at least), and reduces federal regulations & taxes to the point we can get more than 2% GDP growth he'll be fine & all this will be so much pillow biting.

Suggesting his presidency is already cast in failure mode after just 22 days, is patently ridiculous.

NYT, Douthat is Harvard, replaces Bill Kristol

IOW an Eastern intellectual elite which should delight the leading lights here.

JFK had the bay of pigs fiasco but came back on that Cuban missile crisis. Some say he was a bad president; others the opposite, we will see.

Actually, Trump has shown a lot of fight so far; and I heard one lady said she loves it when he takes to twitter.

He's picked a good cabinet;

But I'm glad some folks are so concerned, yes, the headline to Douthat's article is melodramatic; the Washington Post has been horrible in things they published pre-election.

I support Trump, dang rioters on the street trying to slow every thing this admin wants to do.

Not sure about Ukraine, but otherwise, pretty good on everything so far.

Of course it is. Most of what's being written about this fledgling administration is being pulled from nether orifices. As with any administration, they are busy putting together a cabinet while tending to day-to-day affairs.

The talk of chaos could as well have been written of past administrations.

That type of #nevertrump story is the lifeblood of this site

In effect it is the "editorial viewpoint"

BS!  This site allows these stories to be openly and repeatedly challenged!  The other one you post at allows no movement from the party line at all!

I prefer this one thank you!

@Wingnut, that's not quite how I would say it, but I agree with the sentiment.
