Since when?  War, when it becomes necessary or a reality, is an everyman's game....and the next one will include women, as well.   As long as you're physically able to pull a trigger, you're fit to fight.  Even if you only can manage to take one of the enemy down with you, it will be 'worth it' to most fighting that war.

My wife, who came from a country with an ancient history of such things, suggested that as long as its young people rioting in the streets there's really no reason to be concerned. Its when we start seeing the middle aged, middle class out there that things you'll know things are becoming serious.

A civil war is a *WAR*.  Tanks, planes, artillery, and bloody *COMBAT*.

Only the young can play that with any modicum of success.

Those over the hill or elderly tend to *DIE* very quickly in such a situation... and most know it.

So they may talk, but they aren't going to grab their guns and actually go into combat.

Which means no war.

That sounds reasonable and logical.  And come to think of it....out of those 232 DC rioters that were caught....only ten were over 40.  Almost 50 were over 30.  The majority were 18 - 30.   

You probably will never see folks like me in those streets rioting under ANY circumstances.  We prefer to (if it ever comes to it) do our dissenting away from the cameras....lol.

I don't take medications.... and thanks to the internet preppers, I now know how to dig/construct an outdoor latrine.  Even have rattan fencing for privacy.  The only thing I worry about running out of is pet food in a crisis.  Guess I need to learn how to hunt/trap small game.  As for going without power, our ancestors survived quite well without electricity.  We could learn to cope, as well.  We could use all that spare time (not on the internet or watching tv) for target practice.

I use alternative medicine, and native medicines... I've been going to the outhouse throughout my life, off and on... and know how to make tallow lamps and beeswax or tallow candles...

Folks that are out in the sticks will definitely be less impacted. But i disagree with your statement that folks can learn to cope... it takes time and experience to learn bush-craft...Years... The same with gardening and canning... The same with animal husbandry... The same as the skills of a tinker, able to fix things without a parts supply or any money... Rural folks have all that because it is still way-of-life... Other folks don't. And when SHTF, it'll be too late to outfit or learn.

The elderly will fight (on both sides of a war) to their capacity....just as they did in the first civil war.  Some folks are still spry at 71.  Some aren't spry at 51.  Just sayin.....

Well, perhaps I overestimate the capabilities of others.  Let's just say that I could learn to cope without electricity.  I don't have those skills you mentioned, but I have common sense and I'm fairly tough when it comes to having to 'rough it'.   But you're right.  Some other folks don't have that and are not tough and will no doubt not survive.  Law of the jungle and of nature.... will apply.

For the most part, no shooting war or other violence but I think one can make a case that a cultural civil war has gone on for decades and accelerated under the last Presidency.

You are correct it takes time to learn to survive well.  I began learning/doing/storing in 1998 and the learning/doing didn't stop there and I'm still doing it.  I learned to grow many plants from seeds and did it to gather the food/fruit from those efforts.  I did container growing and had 120 containers growing with food, all coming from seeds I started inside.  People who think tossing out seeds gives you food, will die if that is all they have.  My equipment to do such things are basic so they won't stop working and have to be repaired.  I will have power for as long as I need it and it is not generators as they need fuel and can break.  Men, in general, think too big when prepping - one has to think simple solutions to have it last.

It'll be a sight, I'd say... Especially so because the womenfolk have drifted away from the skills that have traditionally been theirs. Few and far are the women that can garden and can, that can sew, not to mention card, spin, and weave... That know edible and medicinal plants and where to gather them...  And many, many other things that are all but lost. So very much relies upon the home-front, whether a cabin or a camp, without which the men will be of little use. How far do you get without making soap, and clothing, and candles? what good is the hunt if you can't store up the meat and tan the hides?

And I ain't cussing you or yours... Folks that prep are far, far better off, because they have begun the long work of relearning, and have store enough to get them by for a while. I am just saying that  when it all comes down, there;s a whole lot to worry about as those stores start becoming bare. And they will.

I know.  But for some unknown reason, I am less worried about that future now that Obama is out of office and Hillary's not in.  I realize that I should never let down my guard or stop being prepared now.  Murphy's Law - Murphy loves unpleasant surprises....that's when Murphy gets you... just when you start to feel 'safe'....lolol.

You're preaching to the choir. Actually, I have a two or three tiered approach, with more options and luxury the closer I can stay to a castle mentality... But I can live indefinitely if I have to walk off with nothing but the clothes on my back, my belt, and my go-bag. And that go-bag is incredibly incomplete by normal standards... It only contains what I need to get what I need from the bush. It might be a rough go, especially in the winter, but it'll do. The fly in that ointment is that I can keep ME that way... Add in the whole fam-damnly and it gets much, much harder.
