PETERSBURG, VA (WAVY) - U.S. Marshals need help to find a convicted sex offender recently released from a Virginia prison.

Marshals say 44-year-old Matthew Ezekiel Stager was released from Federal Correctional Complex in Petersburg on Thursday, Feb. 2. He was supposed to check into a transitional center in Texas that day, but he never showed up.

It’s not clear where he is now.

Stager’s last known location was in Petersburg.

Stager has known connections to multiple states around the country. He has a history of drug abuse and mental health concerns, according to Marshals.

Marshals say Stager is a white or Hispanic male, about 145 pounds, 5 feet 8 inches tall with blond or strawberry hair. He has tattoos on his face, head, neck, back and left foot.

Anyone with information about Stager’s whereabouts should contact the U.S. Marshals at 1-877-926-8332.

I don't understand extensive tattooing or piercings. Too much like self-mutilation.

Many people who get tattoos ask to simply be left alone, free to express themselves as they desire.

I can at once, not like the appearance of heavy tattoos, yet mind my own business.

My wife and I have zero tattoos. We know people that have them.

Tattoos on hands, necks and faces are a expression of extreme rebellion, and fad following.

The Marshal Service will never find him.  No one will be able to call in a tip.  He looks so average, so nondescript.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAVY) — U.S. Marshals have captured a convicted sex offender who was on the lam after being released from a Virginia prison.

45-year-old Matthew Ezekiel Stager was released from Federal Correctional Complex in Petersburg on Thursday, Feb. 2. He was supposed to check into a transitional center in Texas that day. Although the Bureau of Prisons provided Stager transportation to the Richmond International Airport, he never checked into his flight.

Stager was caught in Washington, D.C. after Marshals received several tips about him. At about 4 p.m. Wednesday, he was spotted walking down the street near the D.C. Superior Court by two Metropolitan Police Department officers. Stager was then taken into custody without incident.

Authorities say Stager has an extensive criminal history in seven states that includes drugs, rape and assault.

Stager originally pleaded guilty to charges of indecency with a child in North Carolina in 1999. He never updated his sex offender registration. Authorities said he lived as a transient over the next few years and wasn’t apprehended until December 2012 in Bowling Green, Virginia. He was extradited to Austin, Texas, where he pleaded guilty to violating the Adam Walsh Act and was sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Stager is currently in the custody of U.S. Marshals in D.C. He will be transferred to Richmond to face the escape charge.
