Marines take charge: 'Mad Dog' Mattis arrives at the Pentagon - and is saluted by Joint Chiefs Chairman 'Fighting Joe' Dunford who served under him in Iraq

    Retired Marine General James 'Mad Dog' Mattis arrived at the Pentagon to take up his role as President Trump's defense secretary
    He was greeted as he arrived by Marine General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
    ;Fighting Joe' served under 'Mad Dog' in Iraq in 2003 and 2004 
    The new defense secretary's nomination was rushed through by the Senate and he was sworn in hours after the new president's inauguration
    He sent a message to the Department of Defense saying: 'It's good to be back.'

President Trump's defense secretary, retired Marine General James Mattis took charge of the Pentagon on Saturday - and was saluted by a fellow member of the Corps.

Marine General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, greeted him as he was driven to his office for the first time - a reunion for two Iraq veterans.

Mattis shook hands with Gen Dunford before being escorted inside the Pentagon where he is getting down to work.
