UNESCO Team Visits Aleppo: 60% of Ancient City 'Severely Damaged,' 30% 'Totally Destroyed'

(CNSNews.com) - In its first "emergency assessment mission" to the Syrian city of Aleppo this week, a team from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) found extensively damaged mosques, churches, marketplaces, museums and other significant, historic buildings.

UNESCO also reported “indescribable destruction of learning institutions.”

The ancient city of Aleppo is a U.N.-designated World Heritage Site, but after years of civil war, it lies in ruins.
