I know there are stories of squirrels even ruining houses, I don't know the particulars on cases such as that.
@TomSea I owned a house near a lake but was not living in that one - was living in one a few miles away. A friend had been in and out of that house a few times, then one time told me something had messed up the house, as though someone had been in it. I went there and pictures were turned on the walls, small stuff was spread around, and found a dead squirrel in a bedroom.
Evidently, when this friend had been in the house, he left a door open and in came this squirrel and he got locked up in there. He must have been bouncing around the walls, hence the pictures were moved. Evidently, he died from no water, no food. He didn't smell, so he must not have been dead in there very long.
