The Army’s New Handgun Is… A SIG!!!

Wow!  It’s finally over.  The search for the Army’s new Modular Handgun System has ended.

And the winner is, Sig Sauer!!!  Put another way, the Beretta M9 is dead.

“I am tremendously proud of the Modular Handgun System team,” said Army acquisition executive Steffanie Easter in the release obtained by Military.com.

“By maximizing full and open competition across our industry partners, we have optimized private sector advancements in handguns, ammunition and magazines and the end result will ensure a decidedly superior weapon system for our warfighters.”

The search for the new MHS began in 2011.  The goal was to find a replacement for the Beretta M9 in a timely fashion.  The search was anything but timely.  Delay after delay, deadline missed after deadline missed, it seemed as if the Army would never make up its mind.

But it finally did.  And it’s a Sig!  Presumably a P320-based pistol, which beat out Smith & Wesson, Beretta and Glock for the massive contract worth upwards of $580 million!

No word yet on caliber.

Be awesome if the decommissioned guns are surplussed out to the public. Donny is a lot more likely to make a buck for the govt' on old junk than the Commie gun grabbers getting kicked out tomorrow at high noon.

I wouldn't mind adding a used M9 to my fledgling collection.

It's about as basic, durable and reliable a carry piece you can find and ammo is cheap for them.

I'd have to be real selective in what surplus one I got. I've fired many an Army M9 that was a POS.

Talking decommissioned guns. A couple years back it was in the news that S Korea wanted to return/sell us back sizeable quantities of 1911s, M1 Garands and M1 Carbines. Then Obama squashed the whole thing. I wonder if it will happen now?

That would be awesome.  I've got an officers model 1911 from RIA...but I'd LOVE to have a GI model with U.S. Government stamped on the side of it.

Nice. Very reliable gun. Rumored that you could drive over it and it would still function. (not that I would ever test that).

I don't think this is their first government contract.

They have to have a US subsidiary set up to be able to supply the U.S. Military weapons. FN had to to do the same thing when they started supplying the military with the M249 SAW.
