Bring The Promise Of ‘Free Exercise’ Of Religion Back To America

It's time for Congress to pass the First Amendment Defense Act.

The time has come to restore the promise of the First Amendment that no laws shall be passed “prohibiting the free exercise” of religion.

Congress will soon be grappling with a new version of the First Amendment Defense Act, sponsored in the Senate by Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas. The bill would “prevent discriminatory treatment of any person on the basis of views held with respect to marriage.” It bars federal punishments for individuals who act upon the “religious belief or moral conviction” that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Unsurprisingly, the bill is opposed by liberals who think it goes too far. They fear it will incite discrimination. They fear religious people will be insufficiently malleable.
