While there are haters and nasty people on both sides of the political spectrum, liberals continue to believe (erroneously) that they are the loving and caring people, and all the haters are on the right.
You only have to go to a few liberal web forums like DemocraticUnderground, Salon, and others to know how nasty liberals can be. Many of those people think themselves perfect and conservatives deserving of some sort of terrible punishment including death.
I find it quite ironic that although liberals profess to believe in the goodness and kindness of everybody, they are overall a very pessimistic bunch. For them the glass is always half empty.
It's not enough that the great majority is living okay, if there are a few people who are not living well, then things must be changed, and people (mainly conservatives) have to be blamed for the misery of many people who made their own misery.
For instance homosexuals blamed Reagan for the deaths of thousands of AIDS-infected male homosexuals despite knowing full well that those deaths could have been prevented with a little precaution. Better to blame (falsely) someone else than yourself for your misery....that's the motto of liberals.
