Bipolar disorder is sometimes known as manic depression. It can cause mood swings, from extreme highs to extreme lows, lasting for weeks or months.

The cause is unclear, but genetic and hereditary factors appear to play a role. Triggers include a family history of the condition, alcohol or drug abuse and intense stress or traumatic life events.

Bipolar disorder affects around 2.6 percent of the adult population in the United States. Men and women are equally likely to have it, but it impacts them in different ways, so treatments may be different.

As did I.

Hate to say it, but it's one of the reasons I don't date anymore. I've noticed from experience that bipolar personality traits seem to be more and more common across the spectrum among women. Stability is getting harder and harder to find in the world.

I would rather date someone who is bipolar than someone who is borderline or who is a narcissist.

Borderlines can't be fixed. I personally know therapists who refuse to treat them.

In my PhD training . . . the diagnosis was manic/depressive.

And my profs always said that if you can find a plausible reason for the depression, then it's not manic/depression.

I could always find a reason. LOL.

I think a lot of labels like this get passed around as the vogue, 'in' problem to have.

Or, it's just a handy label to 'blame' every challenge of living on . . . or to blame the hard tasks of dealing with attachment disorder fall-out problems on.

I've become much less sophisticated about labels the older I've gotten.

There's a little craziness . . . moderate craziness and a lot of craziness, imho.

Every person is different. Their dynamics are at least a little different.

And much of it is selfishness, pride, insecurities, attachment disorder stuff and a refusal to do the hard work of growing up . . .

And, to be fair, many people need 'reparented' and there aren't enough good--particularly father figures--to go around.

And that doesn't even get into the demonic influences.

Pastor Henry Wright of

http://www.beinhealth.com

asserts that if he has a schizophrenic in their residential program for 10 days, they can permanently cure them of schizophrenia. I'm inclined to believe him.

I don't  know about brain injury causes--though I suspect Pastor Wright would merely expect God to heal that physiological problem, and He would.

At this age . . . I could support the magnetic transcranial stimulation . . . but I'm increasingly wary of drug coctails for most things.

Particularly for depression COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY has been PROVEN to be MUCH more effective, lifelong cure, no side effects etc. It just takes a good therapist and a determination to do the hard work needed to get better on the part of the client.

@Quix

Amen,amen,a thousand times AMEN!

Drugs should be the LAST resort  for long-care treatment for anything, and used on when the condition is hopeless and there are no other options.

Granted, when someone is in crisis and completely out of touch with reality they need to be sedated to keep from hurting themselves or anyone else, but we as a society need to lose the idea that there is a "easy fix" for mental-emotional problems, and all you have to do is take 73 pills a day and things will be just peachy-keen.

You don't cure a problem by creating a bigger problem.

Bipolar Disorder in Women: What You Need to Know

I know all I need to know already. It effects 100% of women from the time the are born until the time they die. I have a lifetime of scientific data to back that up. Let me tell you about the time I left the toilet seat up by mistake.....

I was reminded of that. Supposedly it was a warm Wednesday afternoon in Oct a year or so before the fateful day, the sun was shining and the birds were singing, right up to the moment *I* left the toilet seat up. My response "If I can remember to put it up,why the hell can't YOU remember to put it down?" didn't seem to help, either. Women HATE logic.

I used to think somewhat similarly . . .

Then . . . I realized . . . that if I Loved someone . . .

I ought to be less selfish and cheeky about insisting that they clean up after my splattered pee instead of me minimizing it by kneeling or sitting or cleaning it up myself.

There are two sure fire ways men will always leave the seat down. Blind men are trained to go to the toilet with the seat down. And when you are an octogenarian or a nonagenarian you pee sitting down.

So I've been told on the latter. As for the first I was told that by a special Ed teacher.

Btw, women can pee standing up. I've done that in the Port Authority. Ever seen those toilet seats? Yeeck!

I did too, the second has been stable for 12 years now, hoping my getting crazier by the day doesn't change that....

I had a lady friend many years ago who was bipolar. She, however had figured out coping mechanisms that included baking, sewing, all sorts of hobbies and got busy to pull through the down swings. Aside from my mother, she is the only woman who made me shirts, and they were heavy chamois style shirts that were every bit as good as what LL Bean had back then. We recognized we would not survive long under the same roof, but stayed good friends. She eventually married a fellow from down in the Big Empty, and from all I have heard, is doing well (her sons are still friends, and are grown men now).

Hi Quix. You in this psy game?

"The cause is unclear, but genetic and hereditary factors appear to play a role."

Are you familiar with Dr Jay Joseph's (contrarian POV) work on behavioral genetics?

No replicability.

We could cut twin studies etc/genetic smoke and mirror 'research' completely out of the NIH/NIMH budget.

Cause a lot less damage to patients (diagnosis/drug cocktails) and the economy (SSI Disability payments) with one fell swoop.

My 'Viking Hunter' High Adventure Alternate History Series is FREE, ALL 3 volumes, at most ebook retailers including Ibooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and more.

In Vol 2 the weapons come out in a winner take all war on two fronts.

Vol 3 opens with the rigged murder trial of the villain in a Viking Court under Viking law to set the stage for the hero's own murder trial.
