UK: Muslim cashier refuses to check out people buying wine, “against her religion”

“If you apply for a job surely you’ve got to be able to do everything within the boundaries of that job.”

Indeed. The question is this: where will British authorities draw the line? How much Sharia compliance is acceptable to them, and how much is too much? Will the principle that all people should have equal access to services give way to Sharia exceptions? How many? Will Tesco eventually set up separate queues for those buying halal products and those buying haram ones? Will it eventually stop selling haram products altogether? Where exactly does this end, as far as Theresa May and her ilk are concerned?

Seems to me it would be more reasonable . . .

for Christians and Jews to refuse to serve Muzzies because doing so would be against Christianity and Judiasm to serve practicing satanists.

Sigh.

Some pharmacists have used this argument when refusing to dispense abortifacients.

True.

So . . . what . . . signs telling customers which cashiers will not handle what items?

Psst. Pssssst.

About 85% of all off licences, newsagents and convenience stores - the place most people buy booze in the UK - are muslim owned.

It made the news because it's something that almost never happens.

Soooooooo, in most contexts . . . the money is the biggest issue, anyway.

. . . until Shariah is in place for everyone in a given geography . . . ?

My roommate for ~16 months was Muslim . . . he didn't drink. I know that a lot of them do. I don't know what percentage. Do you? I assume it varies with  country and maybe social status?

No, I haven't been to a Muslim country.

I'm going to say in the countries I know well (Iraq, Jordan, and Syria), it's about three quarters or them drink. There definitely seems to be a social status aspect to it - the higher the status the more blatantly obvious the drinking, though I do think it's still about 3/4. The poorer folks tend to have to be discreet, for the usual reasons. Wines and spirits mostly, there doesn't seem to be much fondness for beer.

It's quite funny watching the deliveries of "industrial solvent" fresh from Scotland or Russia.

Smoking is similarly done despite the prohibitions, though that does tend to be a lower social class phenomenon.

Interesting.

The arrogance of status, of the elite . . . seems to be pervasive over all times and cultures. We just seem to have an abundance of such in our era.

Of course, hypocrisy is a rather common human flaw, too.

When I was in Egypt, alcohol was illegal there. However, you could get it on the street, like you would buy drugs in America. A guy opened a coat, and showed me what appeared to be bottles of whiskey and vodka. But in Egypt, you never know what you are actually getting. I did not buy. You could buy whiskey or beer only to find that it is colored water. Nothing is as it seems there.

But yes, when I was there in Alexandria, you could not legally purchase alcohol.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

In Jordan you either go to a key club or buy it from auto mechanics - only the proper bottled stuff is street sold. I'm not joking about "industrial solvent." Quality, well, the worst stuff won't send you blind for too long, but mostly it's pretty decent stuff. Think Smirnoff, or Bells whiskey levels. The sellers have an interest in not ripping off the customers too much as their customers are local too.

Street vendors though, you are chancing it. Coloured water with a dash of antifreeze, mostly.

Quix asks:
"So . . . what . . . signs telling customers which cashiers will not handle what items?"

Ahem. You need a sign?
One's eyes will serve one well enough.

When I go to the local Walmart, there is often at least one female cashier who is dressed in muslim garb.

I will not be checked out by her.
I will stand in another line that's longer first.

I'm old, and there ain't much I can do to express my utter disgust with islam.
But I can do that much, to suit myself.

Would a Muslim cashier also refuse to handle dog food, I wonder?

Doubt it. Dog food isn't dog (usually).

I drank locally brewed beer in Yemen, sold in the hotel bar without any label on the bottle.  I wasn't sure what was in it, but it was darn sure more alcohol the 3.2%.

Serving Jews is also forbidden.  Does she get someone to check out Jews?

Not spent a lot of time in Yemen, sounds rather neat!

On a side note - if anyone ever offers you Nigerian Guinness, they are not your friend.
