Detroit Schools Implosion Stumps Parents – And City Makes It Worse

Media report blames choice for failing traditional schools

By Tom Gantert –

Over the past 15 years, enrollment in the Detroit school district has imploded, falling from more than 100,000 students to just under 47,000. Without enough children to fill their classrooms, scores of public school buildings have been closed. The challenge this poses for parents was the focus of a recent story in the New York-based website Vice News. It featured a Detroit mother whose child’s school was shut down in 2013.

The story was titled, “School choice gutted Detroit’s Public Schools.”

The story tracks the impact of closing the Oakman Elementary/Orthopedic School. It reports that then-Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Roy Roberts informed Oakman parents they could send their children to one of two other district schools, Noble Elementary and Henderson Elementary.

Let's face the reality.  It is another liberal disaster.  At one time the school board had chauffeur driven limos, trips to other countries to "check their system," libraries with $150 self operating trash cans, expensive leather furniture for the big shots, etc., etc., etc.  It didn't suddenly implode, it just went they way of thieving democrats.

Nothing in the article suggests that school choice caused it

Actually choice had everything to do with the failure of Detroit’s Public Schools. Their choice to live in Detroit was one factor. Electing liberal democrats was another.

Also their choice of voting for crooks like Kwami Kilpatrick.

Detroit is actually a school choice success story. There are some top notch charters in Detroit that are snagging the best students out of the public schools. (in other words, decent parents are pulling their kids out of public schools and sending them to charters.)

Some great testimonials here.

While being a charter school doesn't guarantee a great education they don't exist for long if they don't produce results. A traditional public school can exist as a brain eating zombie for decades without interference.

In my state charter schools are pretty much just independent for-profit public schools

That's basically what most in Detroit are but for profit means they must produce and there's the fact that the unions and the city hate them so they're always watched.
