Littoral Combat Ship Gabrielle Giffords Delivers to Navy

The Navy accepted delivery of Independence-class littoral combat ship Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) from shipbuilder Mobile Ala. Austal USA during a Friday ceremony, the service announced.

The ship is the fifth Independence-class LCS and is set to commission into the fleet next year in Galveston, Texas and will be homeported in San Diego.

“We are pleased to receive the future USS Gabrielle Giffords into the LCS class,” said Capt. Harrison, commander, LCS Squadron One (COMLCSRON ONE) in a statement. “Gabrielle Giffords will join her sister littoral combat ships in their homeport of San Diego in 2017, commencing testing and training for deployed operations upon arrival.”
Delivery of Giffords – named for a former member of Congress from Arizona who was injured in a 2011 shooting in Tucson – follows a series of acceptance trails which were completed in November.

Does not compute, does not compute!  How did the SecNav choose to name a war ship after an anti-gun activist? :shrug:

USS Gabrielle Giffords Christened As Navy’s First Gun-Free Warship

“Having this mighty warship be 100% gun-free not only helps to honor its heroic namesake, Gabby Giffords, but it also helps the Navy to steer clear of promoting a culture of violence,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, who reportedly lobbied hard to get Congress and the Secretary of Defense on board with leaving the Navy’s newest addition to the fleet completely defenseless.

“Once commissioned and put into service,” Mabus continued, “this vessel will truly embody the Navy’s new motto of Semper Modestis— always considerate.”

Yup a billion million dollar ship that can not defend itself. Looks like the navy is tying to best the air force (F-35) at wasting tax payer money.

The USN, USMC and USAF along with a host of other allied nations are "wasting tax payer money" then...hundreds of F35s are already flying.

The F35 is the replacement for fleets of aircraft (AV-8, F-15, F-16, F-117, F-18) that are over 40 years old from a design and lifespan perspective. 

The LCS is a boondoggle of epic proportions.

Did anyone tell here there will be guns on it?

Maybe they can rename it to "The USS Hypocrite"?

Maybe they will name the next one,the "USS Don't Ask/Don't tell"?

One thing I am certain of is nobody asked the sailors that will serve on that ship how they feel about not being able to defend themselves from enemy attack?

Or maybe the Navy just issued them extra pillows to bite?
