Fascinating,

Carinus fought Diocletian in that area that is close to Greece.

I did not know that, the history of the Romans would really be something I'd like to understand better.

They built Hadrian's wall, there are actually 2 of them, in the UK, to protect themselves. Nothing on the UK up on that map.

That city, Palmyra, in the news recently, sure is interesting, I hope it can be saved some.

I have a wonderful book by Michael Grant which is a listing of all the Emperors from Augustus Caesar to Romulus Augustulus in 475 AD.  It's out of print but if you can find it on Amazon it's worth every penny.

They built Antonine's Wall north of Hadrian's Wall, but retreated from it and it didn't keep the Picts from advancing.

Ultimately the Romans retreated from Britain altogether, to go back home to try to save their empire.

It is such a long history that many changes happened from the start to the end. It was hardly the same empire. At one point daughters were named the feminine version of their fathers name, even if there were multiple daughters they'd all get the same name. Women were barely more than slaves at that point I guess.

Best part is that it's almost like a Hollywood sequel. After they split, the Western dies, and the Eastern continues to live on for another 1000 years, not ending till 2 years after the birth of Christopher Columbus when it was killed off by the Ottomans.

The Republic is lost.

244 years as a Kingdom (753 B.C. to 509 B.C.)
482 years as a Republic (509 B.C. to 27 B.C.)
523 years until the Fall of the Western Empire (27 B.C. to 496 A.D.)
957 more years until the Fall of the Eastern Empire (496 A.D. to 1453 A.D.)

All together, that amounts to  2206 years of history. For contrast, the USA would have to exist as a republic for another 242 years just to match the length of time that Rome existed as a republic... not even counting the time Rome existed as a kingdom, and as an empire.
