Tumblr downed by denial-of-service attack

Tumblr was knocked offline Wednesday afternoon by a denial-of-service attack, the company confirmed.
Researchers believe the attack was launched through the same open source Mirai platform that briefly knocked Twitter and the New York Times offline in October.
In a denial-of-service attack, servers are flooded with too much activity to properly function. Mirai is a free, open source program that hijacks internet-connected devices to simultaneously blast targets with traffic.
