Polar vortex is on its way and it's going to get ugly

By Karen Graham     10 hours ago in Environment
While we are feeling the first Arctic blast of the season this week, next week's weather forecast is going to be a doozy. Winter weather's most unwelcome visitor, the polar vortex is coming for a visit..

Weather forecasters are sending shivers down many people's spines today with a prediction that much of the Northern half of the continental United States could see a blast of frigid weather next week, similar in scale and magnitude to the infamous January 2014 Polar Vortex.

And after a record warm fall, many of us may not be ready for winter, but it looks like it will be hanging around, at least through the middle of December. Here's what we can expect from these two blasts of cold air, according to the latest models:

I'm sure the polar vortex is created by global warming.

The lake froze over last night. Here in Southern Michigan that usually happens between a week before or after Christmas. Not wildly unusual but a bit early just the same.

We're looking at highs in the teens by Wednesday.

Hope not. The last time this happened was 2015 and we had 7 feet of snow in a month. Worst experience of my life (almost).

Oh yes, the polar vortex. More cutsie liberal word arranging to try to somehow link it to global warming. Even though a month ago they were talking about a 'record warm' fall somehow also being caused by global warming. Not to mention every past warm winter the last 20 years. Somehow successive warm and cold winters are both caused by global warming.
The Republic is lost.

Glad our new house has geo thermal...well worth the up front money.   Our old house was propane and the heating cost in bad winters was insane.

Our new house is 3 times the size of our old house and are heating and cooling bills are half.

Going to put a small solar panel on the back roof next year to make it self sufficient in case power goes out.

Somebody left the door to Canada open yesterday.  It's been hovering around freezing since yesterday afternoon!

The wife and I lived in Dallas in the early 80s.  In 1980, we had about 56 straight day where the temp was over 100.  Back then it was called summer now its climate change.

I'm guessing that's ice now.  Nice photo in spite of it.

I remember that summer.  The rich people were buying up all the block ice and dumping in their pools to cool the water down.

The article can be summarized as "coldest weather in nearly three years, expected to last about a week."

So panic.

And, in the mid-80's we had 16" of snow one winter in central Texas.

Modified to say: "a 16" inch snowfall one winter."

Polar Vortex is a stupid way to say winter

but but all the cool kids are saying it these days- in my day we called them cold fronts- back in 1985 i was fishing on a lake at -35f with a wind chill hovering around -60 below- for years after that we'd get 2-4 weeks or so of temps down to about -20 or more- every year- and usually a couple of 'cold snaps' per winter too- We've had fairly mild winters for a number of years now- and all of a sudden the left act like anything below 32f is 'dangerous and unheard of'

I'm 6'3 inches tall- one year when we moved- we had so much snow, it took us 3 days just to shovel out of our old place and shovel in to our new one- I remember shoveling off the deck and the snow has over my belt- took me several hours to get the deck cleared- (it was a big deck)- in one storm alone, we got 33 inches- two days before we moved- of course-

Whenever there was any snow, Dallas became more dangerous than Chicago on a Friday night.  Dry roads or ice covered roads, it was all the same to the drivers in Dallas.

I was in Tulsa in the mid-80's when they got a big snow.  Craziest thing I ever saw.  They eventually plowed the main roads, but instead of pushing the snow off to the side they plowed it all up into the middle of the road.  You couldn't turn left for a solid week.

Weather in my neck of the woods is always a mixed bag and very hard to predict.  We've had brutal winters and winters when people were golfing on New Years. Summers aren't much different.  More than a few summers have been cold and damp.    It's really fun watching the local weather soothsayers trying to predict what will happen in one hour, let alone the next 5 days.  All those computers and gizmos and they still can't predict the weather with even some accuracy.
