Finally Made My First Gun Purchase
« on: November 05, 2016, 11:50:33 pm »
So as some of y'all know I've been kicking around what type of weapon I should by as my first ever handgun purchase.  I've kicked around several types and a couple of different calibers.  Finally got to go to a gun range and actually rented three different guns.  A Para Ordinance 1911 with compact with a 3" barrel...a Ruger .357 that we fired .38 +P and an Springfield XDS 9mm.

So after much thought and to be quite honest a really good deal at my local Post Exchange I settled on this:

Rock Island Armory 1911-A1 CS.

Well built little gun and the price was great too.  Got to take it to the range today for the first time.  I think it's a keeper.

Next time out I'm getting some better ammo...I used some free reloads from a buddy of mine for this round of shooting.  I think I can tighten up my shot grouping next time out.

I don't see what the problem is... A bunch of head/neck, a bunch of center mass, and a bunch to kill that damn bunny he was carrying... Not too many strays after that :)

Congrats.

Looks fine to me.  I have not personally owned one but have heard many good reports on Rock Island Armory products.

Thanks.

Some of it is simply my desire to improve and be a better shot.

Some of my motivation is because I'm catching a ration of crap from my best friend who is a retired Chief Boatswains Mate and wants to know if I was firing a shotgun at that target.   **nononono*

I have a full-size .45 Rock Island 1911. Great gun. And I think that other than the trigger kit, it's all Colt swap-able.

Nice. Very nice. Know your trigger. 3" barrel is easy to "throw" if you don't have excellent trigger control.  Well, that is true for all shooting. Nice piece. Congrats!

Oh... know your trigger!

Lol!  I fully understand the motivation!  You did fine for your first time out with a brand new weapon.

I personally  carry one of the others you tested.  The Springfield with a CT Laser.

Next up on the list is my concealed carry permit.

My wife wants to get her own weapon now and I think I'll oblige her.

This is the one she wants.

But I'll tell you what...I figured out her aiming problem today and she started punching holes in her target like crazy.

Now I've got a Redheaded Texas woman that can hit what she aims at!  :thud:

I won't tell you about  me "teaching" my wife (from Southern  Arizona) to shoot.  It's still embarrassing after more than forty years.

Congratulations. John Moses Browning's design resulted in one of the finest and most reliable pistols ever imagined. As a single-action only pistol with an external hammer, it does require a somewhat different handling and safe carry protocol as compared with most modern (SAO/DAO or DAO) semi-automatics. As always, range time is essential, as well as a reliable holster. I have two 1911s, and love them both. Enjoy!
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

So as some of y'all know I've been kicking around what type of weapon I should by as my first ever handgun purchase.

Excellent first purchase!

Now for the 5 rules of a gun fight:

1) Gun beats no gun
If you dont carry because it will print, is too heavy or just forget it, you have no gun.  If you cant clear a jam, you have no gun.  Send time on the range working to clear a jam.  If you run out of ammo, you have no gun.

2) Fast beats slow
We are talking about getting the gun into the fight here, not the speed of the bullet.  He who shoots first, often forces the other to take cover. Practice drawing from your carry, practice while standing, sitting, prone, etc.  Practice from within the car.  You never know when you will need to draw.

3) A hit beats a miss
The .22 that hits is worth a whole lot more than the .44 mag that misses.  Practice for accuracy.  "Gun Control" means hitting what you aim at.

4) Big holes beat small holes
Hollow points make bigger holes than wad cutters, etc.  Subject to the 3 rules above, carry the biggest hole maker that you can draw and shoot accurately.

5) Many holes beat one hole
If it is worth shooting once, it is worth shooting twice.  Practice the double tap.  Get the follow on shot close to the first.  Oh, and remember what that means with regards to running out of ammunition.

Congrats @txradioguy

I would love to be a gun owner, but I have no depth perception. According to my state test, I cannot get a gun. (Can't see the target)

I also can't fly a plane, not that that would be something I want to do.
