High anxiety for GOP
« on: October 21, 2016, 12:59:25 pm »
By Niall Stanage - 10/21/16 06:00 AM EDT

It’s going to be an anxious 18 days for Republicans.

With the last of the debates over — and polls showing that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was seen as the winner of the final encounter — Republican Donald Trump’s last, best chance to reset the race is likely behind him.

That sets up a fortnight of Trump struggling to do anything possible to boost his flailing campaign — regardless of what that might mean for Republicans down ballot.

The GOP is worried about losing the Senate, and while the House majority had been presumed to be safe, anything seems possible in the volatile electoral moment.

“All existing data points to a blowout at the top of the ticket,” said Rory Cooper, a strategist and one-time aide to former Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.). “Republicans need to persuade voters that Hillary Clinton requires the checks and balances of a Republican Congress, and polling has shown they respond positively to that idea.”

Trump's "the election's rigged" talk drives down Republican turnout, especially among Trump supporters.  Now many of those, in their petulance, weren't going to vote for down-ballot Republicans anyway.   But, the others, if they stay home, will turn some close House elections for the Democrats.

Trump is intent on dragging every other GOP elected official down with him.  Karma for those who stupidly endorsed him.

GOP brought all this on themselves.  They deserve to lose the whole enchilada -- the presidency, the Senate and the House.  While the Trump candidacy played an important part in the GOP destruction, the party itself, through collusion with Obama and the Democrats alienated the party's staunchest supporters.  Just what has the party done for America in all the years it has controlled both houses of Congress?  Indeed, why hasn't the party been able to find any real competition for the presidency?  Three elections, three loser candidates.  No wonder voters are disgusted.

Disgust doesn't even begin to cover it.  More like.... seething animosity and outrage.  It will be a miracle if the GOP retains even the House at this point in our demise.
