Bob Dylan Awarded Nobel Prize in Literature

The singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, one of the world’s most influential musicians, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” in the words of the Swedish Academy.

He is the first American to win the prize since the novelist Toni Morrison, in 1993. The announcement, in Stockholm, was a surprise: Although Mr. Dylan, 75, has been mentioned often as having an outside shot at the prize, his work does not fit into the literary canons of novels, poetry and short stories that the prize has traditionally recognized.

I have to say, his getting the award is something of a surprise... although his work has been very influential over the years!

I have to say, though Dylan's a liberal, he's old school. He doesn't tow to the new fascist liberal orthodoxy that they spew today, and has spoken out against some of their stances.

As much as I loathe everything from the hippy dippy trippy part of the 60's, he's legit. Wrote some amazing folk lyrics.
The Republic is lost.

I can't believe that Bob Dylan is 75 years old, but then again, I can't quite wrap my mind around the somewhat painful fact of my own age at present.

This year, I have found myself listening increasingly to his music, having gone so far as to create my own Pandora channel around him. What has attracted me back to the music that I listened to so many years ago is a renewed appreciation for the depth and maturity of his lyrics.

It certainly isn't his voice, which at its best was ragged if soulfully evocative, and at worst, almost piercingly nasal.

But the lyrics... by turns they are thoughtful, rich in imagery, metaphorically clever, wickedly funny, and astutely perceptive of human nature.  I'm glad that he has been so honored.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I have yet to meet someone who knows all the lyrics to "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doing it again
You better duck down the alleyway
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coonskin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
But you only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D.A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't want to be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. I didn't say that I'd memorized it all....  :silly:

But I do know all of the words to Girl From the North Country and I can play it on the guitar.

The Pali Fan Club isn't going to like this.

Well, the neighborhood bully, he’s just one man
His enemies say he’s on their land
They got him outnumbered about a million to one
He got no place to escape to, no place to run
 He’s the neighborhood bully

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
 He’s the neighborhood bully

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land
He’s wandered the earth an exiled man
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn
He’s always on trial for just being born
 He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad
The bombs were meant for him. He was supposed to feel bad
 He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him
’Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac
 He’s the neighborhood bully

He got no allies to really speak of
What he gets he must pay for, he don’t get it out of love
He buys obsolete weapons and he won’t be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side
 He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease
Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly. To hurt one they would weep
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep
 He’s the neighborhood bully

Every empire that’s enslaved him is gone
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon
He’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand
In bed with nobody, under no one’s command
 He’s the neighborhood bully

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health
 He’s the neighborhood bully

What’s anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin’, they say. He just likes to cause war
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed
 He’s the neighborhood bully

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers? Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill
Running out the clock, time standing still
 Neighborhood bully

Dylan's greatest lyric, IMO, is "Restless Farewell":

Quote
Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend
Be it mine right or wrongfully
I let it slip gladly to my friends
To tie up the time most forcefully
 But the bottles are done
 We've killed each one
And the table's full and overflowed
 And the corner sign
 Says it's closing time
So I'll bid farewell and be down the road.

Oh ev'ry girl that ever I've touched
I did not do it harmfully
And ev'ry girl that even I've hurt
I did not do it knowin'ly
But to remain as friends we need the time
And make amends and stay behind
And since my feet are now fast
And point away from the past
I'll bid farewell and be down the line.

Oh ev'ry foe that ever I faced
The cause was there before we came
And ev'ry cause that ever I fought
I fought it full without regret or shame
 But the dark does die
As the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes
 Must meet the dawn
And if I see the day
 I'd only have to stay
So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone.

Oh ev'ry thought that's strung a knot in my mind
I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung
But it's not to stand naked under unknowin' eyes
It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung
 But the time ain't tall
Yet on time you depend and no word is possessed
 By no special friend
And though the line is cut
 It ain't quite the end
I'll just bid farewell till we meet again.

Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time
To disgrace, distract, and bother me
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face
And the dust of rumors covers me
But if the arrow is straight
 And the point is slick
It can pierce through dust no matter how thick
 So I'll make my stand
 And remain as I am
And bid farewell and not give a damn.

But in this election year, let's not forget this one:

Quote

But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

Dylan's greatest lyric, IMO, is "Restless Farewell":

But in this election year, let's not forget this one:
"Restless Farewell" borrowed quite a bit from the Irish folk song "The Parting Glass" and his " A Hard Rains A-gonna Fall" from "Lord Randall."
Dylan was as original as they come in many ways as far as lyrics, but he wasn't averse to stealing lyrics or song structures when he needed them.

I posted this on another thread, but for those curious about his politics, this may help:

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/bob-dylan-christian-anarchist/
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/21/bob-dylan-the-times-they-are-a-changin-50-years
http://www.redpepper.org.uk/the-politics-of-bob-dylan/
Dylan might not like to be pigeonholed as far as politics, but he did sing at Slick Willy's inauguration. Overall he's pretty liberal.
