US winter forecast: Frequent snow to blast Northeast; Freeze may damage citrus crop in South
Jillian MacMath
AccuWeather.com Staff Writer
September 28, 2016

It will feel like an extended winter for those living from the northern Plains to the eastern U.S., as cold and snowy conditions stretch into spring 2017.
Meanwhile, drier and milder weather will focus on the majority of the southern half of the nation. The Southeast may mark the exception as a chilly January threatens to damage the region's citrus crop.

Frequent storms to bring above-normal snowfall to northeastern US

...

Damaging freeze may threaten citrus crop in southeastern US

...

Bitter cold to grip the northern Plains, Midwest

...

Winter to get late start across southern Plains, Gulf Coast

...

Early storms to blast Northwest, northern California

...

Dry, warm season in store for Southern California, Southwest

These long-term forecasts almost always turn out to be wrong.

I hope so. I'm getting too old for snow shoveling (especially when it has to be done four times a day just to be able to find the driveway).

There are a few very entrepreneurial teens with snow blowers who do that kind of stuff for me. :)

We have only a few elementary school kids at our end of the street, and they probably can't be torn away from their video games. So it's up to ol' Mr. and Mrs. Mountaineer again this year!

Weird getting rain out of the east here in Michigan today. Most of our weather comes from a westerly direction.

I managed to snag a lot of business all over the state in January, hoping it will just be cold and the roads passable..

The truth is that—with very few exceptions—there is simply too much chaos in the atmosphere to reliably forecast beyond two weeks or so (or less in certain situations, such as hurricane season, where a few degrees angular difference in a cyclone's track one way or the other can alter weather patterns fundamentally). Technology has improved rapidly in the past few years; it used to only be a week, and before that only a few days, but now the NWS is starting work on a 3-4 week general outlook. Even so, natural variability and the limits of measurement will be a hindrance to any long-range outlook.

The farmers' almanacs, by the way, I suspect incorporate astrology—in other words, pure pseudoscience, perhaps corrected with modern astronomical measurements.
