Raised-fist Olympians punished in 1968 will be received at White House

 By Sharon Bernstein and Alex Dobuzinskis

Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the two African-American athletes sent home from the 1968 Olympic Games for their raised-fist protest on the medal podium, will receive a long-awaited moment of redemption at a U.S. team event at the White House this week.

The two were invited by the U.S. Olympic Committee to attend a gala dinner on Wednesday in Washington honoring the 2016 Olympic team and accompany the team to meet President Barack Obama at the White House the following day, Carlos told Reuters on Sunday.

The image of Smith and Carlos, gold and bronze medalists in the 200-meter track event in Mexico City, thrusting their black-gloved fists into the air, has become an enduring symbol of the fight for racial equality.

Their protest didn't do diddley squat to help race relations...it probably worsened them. Race relations were at least progressing under the direction of MLK. Then along came the race agitators like Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, and whole bunch of other agitators who basically defecated on the non-violent movement. The Black Power movement of that time wasn't a movement to gain equal rights, it was a hate-America/hate Whitey movement.  Smith and Carlos represented the hate America side.
During the first half of the sixties they had passed the Civil Rights bill. Many people thought progress could be made peacefully.   The race agitators fomented division and hatred of whites.  Smith's and Carlos's protests just made things worse.

This action on the part of Obama is just another in a long line of middle fingers directed at white folks (aka bitter clingers). With regard to your comment about MLK, @goatprairie , I would like to think that if he were alive today, he'd be appalled at the perversion of his efforts and his message.

Maybe. But you have to remember that most of the black civil rights people who worked with King's org.  (John Lewis, Jess Jackass er Jackson, etal) turned out to have learned nothing. Most of them became whiners and complainers  and/or money-hungry scoundrels.
Not only that, the non-violent Civil Rights movement was totally taken over and kicked to the curb by the angry black voices who didn't like America or whites.  That happened even before King was killed. The violent anti-American black figures like Malcolm X, Huey Newton, and Stokely Carmichael and their advocacy of anti-Americanism and hatred of whites resonated more with young blacks than King's non-violent/love America message.
I think King was basically a lone voice among a bunch of scoundrels.

Of course they will. The racist resident of the Off-White House these days agrees with them that blacks are the Master Race.

@mountaineer

You know what is at the root of his hatred,don't you? He's still mad at his white whore mother for getting pregnant by an African instead of a white man. He was THIS close to being born a white man,and then the bitch met the African and wanted to send a statement.

Dig deep enough,and you will discover he hates being black,and hates black people.  Hell,even at the bathhouse it was said he preferred white boys.
