The personal driver of Russian president Vladimir Putin died earlier this week in a head-on collision on a main street in Moscow.

Putin was not in the vehicle at the time.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving Putin’s personal black BMW down Kutuzovsky Avenue when another car, travelling down the wrong side of the street, plowed directly into him.

The average Russian drives drunk almost every day. If they ever did an alcohol checkpoint over there, the rate would be well over 90%, if not 100%.

It took me a while to acclimate to the idea that many nations in the world consider drinking at work, and while on the road to be normal. It is not a preferable thing for someone to do, but it is not really a big deal like in America.

You can smell vodka in the air just walking near a Russian tenement. Drinking is a way of life.
