NFL Player Who Visited Pot Store Before Game Sprints to Big Lead as Rookie Dumbass of the Year

August 27, 2016| by Donn Marten

Late August is a time of anticipation for football fans as the college season prepares to kick off and the pro football preseason winds down. Despite it’s many flaws, thugs and overpaid Prima Donnas as well as the ongoing corporatization of the game, the NFL is still the choice of die-hards when it comes to an avenue of escape from the miserable realities of life. But along with the box scores comes the police blotter upon which will land an inevitable array of chuckleheads who despite their high-paying dream gigs just can’t manage to stay out of trouble.

There is already a breakaway leader for rookie dumbass of the year award and that goes to Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott who chose to take advantage of a trip to the Emerald City to visit a marijuana store before Thursday’s exhibition game against the Seattle Seahawks.

ESPN reported on the incident in the story “Jerry Jones: Ezekiel Elliott’s pot dispensary visit ‘just not “good’”:

Marijuana is legal in Washington.  Does the NFL get its panties in a bunch when a running back has a beer?

Oh, and Elliott had a pretty good set of downs when he played the next night.

It's called image and the Cowboys have one they don't like tarnished.  It's called being a rookie and going against that image, not a good image to Cowboy fans.  I'm sure a sizeable number of Cowboy fans (and Cowboys) use pot, too, but to have a player on national TV, for all intents and purposes, endorse pot is more than a lot of parents are willing to put up with.  Maybe in Seattle they don't care about the images their kids get from pro athletes; in the south, they do.

You can't fix stupid.  But in the NFL they recruit it.

The NFL has every right to set the rules. Just because something is legal does not mean an employer can't have policies against it.

I bet he stood for the National Anthem, though.
