They've always been more secular had a really good working relationship with the U.S. military. Erdogan has been systematically purging those generals and replacing them with Sharia types. Sounds like the military decided to put a stop to Erdogan's attempt to play footsie with ISIS.

He claims to be in charge while calling on the people to take to the streets. Very desperate.
