PORTLAND, Ore. -- A study out of Portland State University finds some Oregon oysters contain a cocktail of pharmaceuticals and other potentially harmful chemicals.
PSU marine ecologist Elise Granek and a team of researchers studied Olympia oysters in both Netarts Bay and Coos Bay.
"Oysters are an indicator of the types and levels of contamination we see in the ocean," said Granek.
Olympia oysters are native to the Pacific Northwest.
The researchers found oysters in both areas contained a variety of potentially harmful chemicals, like PCBs, pesticides, mercury and flame retardants.
They also found the oysters contained drugs like pain relievers, antibiotics and antihistamines.
According the Oregon Health Authority, the contaminants found in the native oysters were all well within safe limits...
