Russia Vows 'Asymmetrical' Response to NATO Expansion in Eastern Europe

Published 31 March 2016 (4 hours 4 minutes ago)

Russian envoy to NATO slammed the alliance and the U.S. over new plans to deploy a military brigade in Eastern Europe.

Russia promised Wednesday a “totally asymmetrical” response to NATO’s plan to deploy more troops to eastern Europe in order to counter what the alliance calls “Russian aggression,” Moscow’s envoy to NATO Aleksandr Grushko said in an interview.

“We are not passive observers, we consistently take all the military measures we consider necessary in order to counterbalance this reinforced presence that is not justified by anything,” Grushko said in an interview with TV channel Rossiya-24, according to Russia Today. “Certainly, we’ll respond totally asymmetrically.”

The Russian diplomat said that such moves by the United States and NATO in eastern Europe constitutes a military threat to Russia, adding that Moscow’s response “would not be extremely expensive, but also highly effective.”

He also warned the U.S. and NATO of a "substantial change" and deterioration in the region's "security situation."

Grushko’s comments came hours after Washington announced a continuous presence of armed units in ally countries in eastern Europe to reassure them against an “aggressive” Russia.

"This army implementation plan continues to demonstrate our strong and balanced approach to reassuring our NATO allies and partners in the wake of an aggressive Russia in Eastern Europe and elsewhere," General Philip Breedlove, the top U.S. commander in Europe, said in a statement Wednesday.

Despite continuing confrontation from NATO, the Russian diplomat said the new measure by the alliance has yet to completely damage the fragile ties between Moscow and NATO, expressing hope for future security cooperation.

“Cooperation will be possible only when NATO countries start realizing that the policy of confrontation contradicts their own national interests,” Grushko said. “We hope that sooner or later all the ties, which we used to have and which used to be effective, will be re-established and our cooperation will continue.”

Relations between Moscow and the U.S.-led NATO reached its lowest point since the end of the Cold War in 2014 over the situation in Ukraine and the reunification of Crimea, as the West accused Russia of supporting a rebellion in the eats of the country against Kiev, charges Moscow flatly deny.
