The Hashtag #22Kill Is Appearing Everywhere… Here Is Its Shocking Meaning

A hashtag has become a popular way to increase awareness of causes or trending topics in the world of social media. Now, the meaning behind the #22Kill hashtag has been explained, and its origins are both sad and inspiring.

A few years ago, a survey showed a horrific statistic. One that involves those men and women who spent their lives ensuring our safety at home and abroad: our military veterans. This particular statistic is what inspired the hashtag #22Kill.

The survey revealed that 22 soldiers and veterans die every day as a result of suicide. There are many organizations that were created to address this growing issue, and one of them is called 22Kill.

In these past few weeks, the hashtag #22Kill and the #22KillPushUpChallenge, challenged social media users to do push-ups for a cause and raise awareness about this startling statistic.

“Help us reach our goal to get 22 million push-ups – to honor those who serve and to raise awareness for veteran suicide prevention through education and empowerment,” the group stated in a news release. “Every push-up counts, so don’t be shy to show your support for our veterans. You can do as many or few push-ups as you can or choose.”

However, once this challenge hit social media, it took on a life of its own. People everywhere, including veterans, and civilians, have dropped and given the cause 22.

Past and present service members answered the challenge:

Some even chose to work out around their pets:

Some are doing it in groups, as several members of the Canton Police Department in Georgia did and shared their challenge video. So did athletics organizations like the Loyola University men’s volleyball team, one of many collegiate athletic teams to accept the challenge.

In order to do the challenge, you must record yourself and/or challenge a friend and be sure to include the hashtag #22Kill. Also be sure that your post is set to public so that 22Kill can keep its pushup count accurate.

What an amazing way to spread awareness! Drop and give ’em 22!
