Kerry: Deal reached to end hostilities in Syria
« on: February 12, 2016, 05:38:57 am »
Rather small, insignificant story about what could be considered a major event. Note, too, it says nothing about the fate of Assad. I assume that since nothing is said, and the Ruskies signed on, he's going to retain his office. [President Obama said Syrian President Bashar al Assad has lost his legitimacy and “must go,” during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on March 20 (2013)]

"An agreement to cease hostilities in Syria has been reached, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Thursday in Munich.

The announcement came after a meeting with major powers in Munich to address the ongoing civil war in the Middle Eastern nation.

"We have agreed to implement a nationwide cessation of hostilities to begin in a target of one week's time," Kerry said in a joint press conference alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

"That's ambitious, but everybody is determined to move as rapidly as possible to try to achieve this."

Kerry added that terror groups like Nusra and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria will not be subject to the agreement.

The announcement came after a meeting with diplomats from 17 countries in Munich to address the ongoing civil war in the Middle Eastern nation.

The parties involved also agreed to allow for immediate humanitarian aid to residents of besieged Syrian cities."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced Friday that diplomats have agreed to “a cessation of hostilities” in Syria, adding that work on implementing the agreement would take place next week.

Kerry spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.N. Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura in Munich, Germany, following the meeting of the International Syria Support Group. The group consists of 17 countries as well as the Arab League, European Union, and United Nations.

“We have agreed to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid and implement a nationwide cessation of hostilities,” Kerry said.

Kerry added the agreement should not be considered a ceasefire, which he described as a more permanent end to a conflict.

Lavrov, however, repeatedly described the agreement as a ceasefire while speaking through a translator.

A task force will next week begin planning the process of putting an end to violence in the country, which has been engulfed in civil war as terrorist groups have also taken over swathes of territory. The violence has sparked a global refugee crisis, and within Syria, millions have been displaced — many of them cut off from aid by fighting.

“We approach this with a uniform belief that the killing and starvation of innocent people needs to end as soon as possible,” Kerry said.

Friday’s agreement is significant, Kerry added, but its true measure remains to be seen.

“This will be measured by what happens on the ground,” he said. “This will be measured by the steps people take in the next days.”

Given the history of Mideast cease fire agreements in the past, this one should last up to 72 hours. :tongue2:

then how can hostilities be stopped if they are not part of the deal?
