I missed the first 30 min, so did not see that. Very awkward, indeed. Obviously, he did not hear his introduction and was waiting for it.

Carson was like a deer in the headlights.

It looked like either he was having a nervous breakdown, or was contemplating dropping his pants and streaking the stage.

Nope.  Camera crew told him more than once to get on the stage.  He just stood there, arms folded like a tree.

I only saw the SNL recap of it on their Weekend Update segment. I felt sorry for the guy. Especially after one of the stage hands tried to prompt him to go and he just stood there confused. Then Trump jumped in to stay in front of the camera in an obvious opportunity to be part of that story instead of prompting Carson to go up to the stage.
