Jazz clarinet great Pete Fountain dies at 86

A contemporary and friendly rival with Al Hirt, Fountain first rose to fame in the 1950s when he was selected as a charter member of Lawrence Welk's orchestra. A highly respected clarinetist (in an era when Welk's orchestra was still seen as mediocre), Fountain amicably left the Welk show in 1958, disagreeing with Welk over his rendition of the Christmas song "Silver Bells."

From there, Fountain signed with Decca Records, recording a string of commercially successful albums, and established a permanent base in New Orleans, where he fronted his own band and stayed in the national limelight with a series of over 50 appearances on The Tonight Show during Johnny Carson's time as host. A New Orleans legend, he appeared annually in the city's Mardi Gras celebrations as leader of the "Half-Assed Walking Club," in which he and his fellow musicians would get drunk and play music.

No cause of death was stated.

Character actor Fyvush Finkel dead at 93

12:04 p.m. EDT August 15, 2016

NEW YORK — Fyvush Finkel, the plastic-faced character actor whose career in stage and screen started in Yiddish theater and led to memorable roles in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway and on TV in Boston Public and Picket Fences, has died, his son said Monday. He was 93.

Finkel, who was known for his mischievous smile and an ability to prop his ears at an angle for optimum comic effect, died early Sunday in Manhattan, said his son, Ian. He said his father had suffered heart problems for months.

He was a comedian, singer, stage actor, film actor and a familiar TV performer, from Fantasy Island to Blue Bloods to Picket Fences, for which he was nominated for an Emmy twice and won once, in 1994, according to his IMDb page. He celebrated his 80th birthday on the set of Boston Public, playing history teacher Harvey Lipschultz.

Lou Pearlman, con artist behind the 1990s boy band boom, dies at 62

Pearlman's Trans Continental conglomerate was originally in the aircraft business (which he propped up by questionable stock dealings) before, inspired by the success of the New Kids on the Block in the early 1990s, he set his sights on the music industry. Pearlman's first creation, the Backstreet Boys, was a huge success, which Pearlman followed with NSYNC, O-Town and LFO, among several others, as well as Innosense, the girl group best known for introducing Britney Spears to the general public. Most of the bands under Pearlman's tutelage eventually sued him.

His purchase of a talent scout company managed by Ayman el Difrawi would prove to be the beginning of his downfall, as the business model Pearlman embraced was widely accused of being a scam. In his last active years, Pearlman ostensibly relaunched his aircraft business and started recruiting investors—the problem was, the aircraft business this time was a fake paper business, and Pearlman was running a Ponzi scheme. He was convicted of fraud and sentenced to a 25-year jail sentence. He died in jail.

I actually found him more believable as a spy in Mission: Impossible, than Peter Graves, who replaced him after the first season.  Still, he had a good long career... including 229 episodes on Law and Order.
