If a "public" stadium needs to go up, I have no problem with the govt. entity being involved with financing. I want the taxpayers repaid of course.

But I don't want downright criminals to play in the facility, paid millions.

Yes, but "government entities" have no money.  They have to take it from the taxpayers in order to give it to someone else.

So no more civic buildings? Heard of bonds? Paid by gate receipts?

LA Coliseum and Pasadena Rose Bowl built 1921-23, both with capacities over 100,000, have presumably repaid the original investments many times over.

[float=right][/float]Monte Irvin, oldest living Negro Leaguer, dies at 96

Originally interested in playing college football, Irvin began his professional baseball career with the Newark Eagles of the Negro Leagues, where he spent several nonconsecutive seasons (Irvin also served in World War II at the peak of his career). He joined Major League Baseball in 1949, playing for the New York Giants for six years and the Chicago Cubs for one more. Despite his relatively short professional career, frequent injuries and only one All-Star Game appearance, Irvin was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

Irvin was living in assisted living in Houston at the time of his death.

Céline Dion's husband René Angélil dies

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2016/01/14/celine-dions-husband-rene-angelil-dies/78806790/

René Angélil, the husband of and mentor-manager who helped make Canadian singer Céline Dion a mega star, has died after a years-long battle with throat cancer. He was 73.

The news was confirmed on Dion's website Thursday where a statement announced Angélil died at their home in Las Vegas "after a long and courageous battled against cancer. The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time."

My BIL is friends with them. He is a professional precision auto driver, and did a tour with them while they filmed car ads around the world. He is also a musician and did a little playing and singing with her along the way. He thinks very highly of the couple, and I am certain he will send his respects.

Yes, but those stadiums have lasted almost 100 years now. Today's stadiums don't last 20 without being declared obsolete.

California has ballot iniatives. Notice the cities for new stadiums are Inglewood, and Carson? Not LA?

Inglewood and Carson are NOT rich towns. To agree they need good deals, for they do NOT have money to give away.

Therefore I believe the stadiums are largely self-financed. Not taxpayer subsidized.

Dodger stadium and Angel stadium, both past 50 years.

Haggerty and that show inspired alot of people during the big 70's back-to-the-land movement. Strange the effects something like that can have.

Ted Marchibroda, NFL quarterback and coach, dies at 84

Perhaps the most illustrious quarterback to have ever emerged from the long-extinct football team at tiny Saint Bonaventure University, Marchibroda played four seasons in the NFL, for the Pittsburgh Steelers and then-Chicago Cardinals. He made a larger mark in coaching, where he earned accolades for his work as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, helping to develop the Buffalo Bills' Super Bowl era offense. He head-coached for the Baltimore Colts from 1975-79, the Indianapolis Colts from 1992-95, and the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-98, ending his career as the Colts' color commentator in 2006. As a head coach, Marchibroda was a modest success but went winless in the playoffs until reaching the AFC Championship Game in 1995.

I read in one of the stories about Noreen Corcoran that her family (with many child actors) had lived in Santa Monica, but I distinctly recall attending elementary school with some of them in Northridge, Calif. There hardly was a Disney movie that didn't feature a Corcoran.

T_S, I was just typing that news up as you posted.

You listen to Frey's work with the Eagles, and then listen to his work as a solo artist, and you'd swear they were different artists. Either way, the guy had talent. A lot of his stuff resonates with me.

I always thought Joe Walsh would be the 1st to go.   The Eagles were a hard living and fighting band till their break up.  Frey said they specialised in a quiet turbulence.

Walsh has been sober for over 21 years.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2015/10/07/lifes-been-good-to-eagles-guitarist-joe-walsh-after-he-got-sober/

I will celebrate 22 years sober Feb. 5th, so the people that are in my category I take an interest with.

Some of the performers developed drug/alcohol addictions. It killed some, but some lived to clean/sober up in time.

There is quite a large group with 20 plus years, including Clapton, Elton John,Ringo Starr and many others.

Mic Gillette pasted away January 17th from a heart attack, he was 64.

Quote
An original member and leader of the legendary Tower of Power Horn Section, Mic has also established an enviable reputation for his work with youth and school bands. In particular, his affinity for working with middle school and high school students has endeared him to a whole new generation of fans in the 21st century.

I have always been a Tower of Power fan.
