The United States considers reopening the Keflavik base in Iceland

The United States is considering to reopen the Keflavik base in Iceland, which was regarded as a strategic important point against Russia during the Cold War.

USA ran the air base from 1951 to 2006 and has met with the Icelandic authorities indicateing that they are considering to reopen the base, writes the Iceland Review.

- Iceland is interested in increased military cooperation, says the US Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work to Defense News.

Bob Work was last week touring the Nordic countries and also visited Oslo in Norway.

America's growing concern about Russia was discussed during the talks.

During the visit in Iceland he visited the Keflavik base, which is now partly used for student housing and concerts.

- The hangars are still there, confirmed Work, and the commander of the airbase stressed that the base is well maintained since the Americans left it almost ten years ago.

- There is much room for new structures and facilities here, said Jón Gudnason.

The Icelandic authorities confirmed that the Keflavik base was the theme during Work's visit, but stressed that the idea to reopen the airbase is not an Icelandic initiative.
