Death toll in Austrian migrant truck over 70: government

The bodies of more than 70 dead migrants have been recovered from an abandoned truck found on an Austrian motorway, more than the initial estimate of between 20 and 50, the Austrian government said Friday.

The number was confirmed to AFP by interior ministry spokesman Alexander Marakovits. The lorry was found on Thursday morning on a motorway near the borders with Slovakia and Hungary.

No further details on the identities, ages or origin of the dead was available, but Austrian police in the eastern state of Burgenland were due to give a news conference at 11:00 am (0900 GMT).

The refrigerated, 7.5-tonne lorry had Hungarian number plates and the markings of a Slovakian poultry firm. The driver was nowhere to be seen and Austrian and Hungarian police have launched a joint investigation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in Austria for a summit with Balkan leaders on Europe's migrant crisis on Thursday, said she was "shaken" by the "horrible" news.

"This is a warning to us to tackle this migrants issue quickly and in a European spirit, which means in a spirit of solidarity, and to find solutions," Merkel said.

What do you think is going to happen here, if we "legalize" the 30+/- million illegals who have already invaded America?

I don't disagree.  We and the EU just seem too afraid to stand up and do what needs to be done to stop it.

If one studies the history of Europe, one learns that the Germanic tribes originated in south-central Asia, migrating west and north man thousands of years ago.

And one learns the Celts originated in or near the same place in Asia, and likewise migrated west.

People walked across a land bridge from the European continent, to Britain.

Eventually the Celts, Romans and invading Anglo-Saxon Germans fought in Britain. Later the Anglo-Saxon Germans and the Nordic-Germans also fought in Britain.

The Native Americans arrived in North America, after crossing a land-bridge from Asia. Thousands of years later they fought the invading Euro-Americans.

And so on.
